
Choosing an AI Agent Platform: Look Beyond Model Count
Evaluate agent platforms by orchestration, tool safety, identity, evaluation, observability, cost, and portability—not by the length of the model list.
A long model list is not a production capability
Drag-and-drop demos and dozens of supported models are easy to compare. Real business value depends on how an agent connects to data and systems, obeys permissions, handles failure, is evaluated, and stays within cost limits.
Evaluate four building blocks
Agent management should version roles, models, knowledge scope, and collaboration rules. Functions should validate parameters, propagate identity, enforce least privilege, remain idempotent, and require confirmation for payments, deletion, external messages, or permission changes.
Orchestration should express branches, exceptions, and human review while preserving each step’s inputs and outputs. Routines should turn a proven task into a governed template with scope, trigger, SOP, metrics, and owner.
Test production behavior
Score data connectivity, integration, identity, orchestration, evaluation, audit, cost control, and operations. Give every vendor the same realistic scenario, then introduce conflicting knowledge, an unavailable API, an invalid parameter, and an unauthorized request.
Observability should reveal retrieved evidence, model and tool versions, token use, latency, failures, and sensitive operations. Without it, teams cannot distinguish a model problem from a knowledge or integration problem.
Choose the operating model by risk
SaaS is fast for common low-risk work. Low-code helps business teams compose flows but must still support versioning and debugging. Self-built services offer control for sensitive, deeply integrated tasks but create a lasting engineering and security obligation.
Use a scenario card before procurement and include migration and exit costs. The best platform is the one that makes agents controlled, measurable, traceable, and replaceable.
